a happy update and some questions

[Backstory: Bringing US fiancé/husband to Norway]

Current statusCollapse )

Questions:

I know that pallidpanacea has gone through this before but there might be more of you guys out here.

I know that you shouldn't lie to the immigration people, but what did you tell them when you arrived at Oslo? Did you say that you are entering Norway to wait for the application to go through (and that you were aware that it would exceed your 90 visa free days), and was there any trouble?

Did you submit the application before or after you entered the country. Are there any rules or suggestions for when you must submit? Since we are both coming to Norway together should we submit it through the Norwegian consulate in the US, or through the police in Norway?

Did any of you bother to get health insurance for the foreigner, since they are not members of Folketrygden while they wait?

I have more but this is all I can remember at the moment.

Update - heard from UDI

I heard back from the Norwegian Immigration office yesterday. Things were a little fuzzy for us when it came to the rules, but I got it explained, and it was like I thought.

(Backstory: I am Norwegian, my fiancé is American, we want to marry and live in Norway.)

We have a choice now - go the safe, slow and painful route, or the quicker, less safe one. Apply for a fiancé visa and not see him for a year and a half, or have him come to Norway and marry me right after and apply from here. The second one sounds much more appealing, since it means being apart for 9 months instead of 16, which we have done before so I know I won't die:p

Of course the immigration people are advising us to go the Engagement visa route. But seeing as I am currently just a temp worker at my job we can't start the process until around this summer. From then it takes 8 months:(

We both want to just have my boy come over (on the 90 day visa free visit) and get married a few weeks later, and according to the law he can apply from Norway. I am also thinking if it would be safer for me to go over and marry him in the states, so that we are already married when he enters the country.

I am looking for people who have gone through this or something similar. Did it work to apply from Norway, or did things get screwed up? I want to make extra sure that he doesn't get kicked out while waiting for residency permit.

NGOs in Stockholm, Sweden

Hello everyone!

This is Aveline from Singapore. I'm studying Law at the National University of Singapore and I was recently in Stockholm 2 weeks ago. I will be visiting again in June and I'm planning to work at an NGO (non-governmental organization) in Stockholm, Sweden, when I graduate next year. I've been trying to find more information on NGOs in Stockholm that I can contact, but it's not bearing any fruit. I'd really appreciate it if any of you could point me to a friend or resources that would help. Thank you so much :)

studying in Norway?

hey everyone,
I am from South Carolina, US.  I am currently working on my undergraduate degree in Sculpture here, but want to go to Graduate school in Norway.  Oslo Academy of the Arts (khio) and Bergen Academy of the Arts (khib) are the schools that I am interested in.  Does anyone have any advice for exchange students?  I have no idea what the European/Scandinavian school system is like.  I know that tuition is free, but the cost is made up for high  living expenses.  Anyone have an approximate idea of what it costs to live per month in Oslo?
I have also met someone (a guy,...)  that I plan to see quite often when I am in Oslo:)  Hopefully I will have more updates on that as time progresses!     (I see that there arent too many members of this community quite yet... hopefully it will grow!)

thanks a ton!

Intro post

I am Kristine, 20 years old. I live in Northern Norway. A couple of years ago I went on exchange to the USA, and did something I probably shouldn't have done.... I fell in love with an American boy.

And the community is oficially open!

Hello, and welcome:)

As a person who is currently going through an immigration process to Norway, it is a little annoying that all the other communities are USA/UK/Canada related. We need a place of our own. So I created this community.

I have yet to finish customizing this place, but it will be in order in a few days. In the meantime you are all welcome to join the community and start posting.

If you have any requests for links or related communities to be added to the bio, please comment on this post.
